French Toast with Caramel Sauce


Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 loaf brioche, cut into thick 1-inch slices
For caramel sauce:
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar (dark or light)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
Optional additions:
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Make egg mixture: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  2. Prepare brioche: Cut brioche into thick 1-inch slices and arrange them in a 16-inch round skillet or baking dish.
  3. Soak bread: Pour egg mixture over the bread and place in the refrigerator to soak overnight.
  4. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Make caramel sauce: In a small saucepan, stir together butter, brown sugar, and heavy cream. Heat on medium-high heat until caramel sauce begins to bubble.
  6. Assemble French toast: Pour caramel sauce over the soaked bread.
  7. Bake: Bake for 40 minutes, or until bread is crisp and egg mixture has set.
  8. Serve: Dust with powdered sugar or maple syrup (optional). Serve warm and enjoy!
