Homemade French Onion Dip

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2-3 medium yellow onions, diced
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar (optional, but recommended)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh chives
  • 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the onions:

    • In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter.
    • Add the diced onions and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25 minutes, or until the onions are soft and golden brown (caramelized).
    • Set aside to cool.
  2. Combine the dip ingredients:

    • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, remaining salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy.
    • Add the chives, bacon, and caramelized onions and stir well to combine.
  3. Chill and serve:

    • Cover the mixing bowl tightly and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours.
    • Serve chilled, garnished with additional bacon pieces and chives if desired, with chips or whichever dippers you prefer.
